Backyard Bugs Cakelet Pan

by Arieanna on June 13th, 2007

The Backyard Bugs Cakelet Pan ($34) bakes a medley of cute little critters. The baking pan features two molds each of bees, butterflies, ladybugs and dragonflies. Bake these adorable little bugs and decorate them with your kids.  The designs are detailed and fun for any summer party.

They do look cool. In practice however they cake sticks and the bugs fracture coming out unusable, even when closely following the manufacturers directions.

I have this pan and LOVE it. I found that the person who wrote the directions for William Sonoma either doesn’t bake many cakes or has no interest in modern techniques. If you spray the pan with a nonstick spray they com out easily, in tact and beautiful. If you freeze them after hey have cooled then you can cut the bottoms smooth so they lay flat (This is also the easiest way to cut them in layers and fill them if you want). I used a chocolate ganache as a frosting and all the detail showed through without much effort. Then you can decorate the details only. Have fun!
