Garlic Press Wars
Since I’ve recently been on the lookout for a new garlic press, I thought I’d ask for some feedback - which garlic press style do you absolutely love. And why?
Which style of garlic press do you like?
- Standard Press Model (various varieties)

- Twist Model

- Rotary Model

- Garlic Slicer or other Grating method

- Dicer

There are just so many - some press with very little effort. Some are harder to press, but easier to clean. So, what do you think of the above styles? And do you have a favorite brand in any of them?

I think you forgot one important alternative: I never press garlic but cut it with my knife.

Yeah, I thought about adding that, but thought it might bias the results. It’s more of a ‘method’ than a ‘grater’ option.
I know a lot of people prefer to mince their garlic for the best flavor - that’s what I do most of the time - but then it wouldn’t be about comparing graters. :)
The best part about using the knife, I think, is the smash stage. Always nice to vent any frustrations on the garlic.

Garlic seems to change flavor depending on the fineness of the dice. It gets “hotter” the more finely it is chopped. You would think that a press would make it hottest, but for some reason it doesn’t. I smash and dice with a knife, and only use the standard press for a large amount of garlic, or when it will not be cooked for very long.

Use the fine side of your cheese grater, easy to clean, easy to use. You don’t even have to peel it, the skin comes right off!

How do you hold the garlic to get it all grated without cutting your fingers?

I usually smash and dice with a knife. If I need a more consistent texture then I’ll use my Microplane Coarse grater.

I too just smash and dice with a knife. MY least favorite is actually the garlic press, you loose half the clove in the process of pressing it.
