Liz’s Fave Cooking Gadget: Truffle Shaver

by Arieanna on August 28th, 2008

Liz has submitted this guest post for the "Your Favorite Cooking Gadgets" series. If you want to contribute a guest post, read more here. And read on for Liz’s favorite gadget - a truffle shaver!

I know a Truffle Shaver sounds uber fancy but its really been my best purchase in a long time. I have a tiny tiny tiny kitchen; it’s really a hallway with a sink and a 2 burner hotplate I cook off of. Since I have such a small space, cooking has unfortunately become difficult and so usually my meals are made as quickly as possible.

To cut down on cooking times I like to cut my vegetables as thin as possible. I saw a truffle shaver listed on another blog as a fancy tool, but I thought about it and it sounded like a good idea for me. I bought it at Willams-Sonoma for only $12 and I use it daily. It perfect for slicing vegetables from paper thin (literally) to about 1/3 " thick. It works so fast you can shave them right into the skillet or dish and there’s virtually no clean up! A mandolin would be nice for all the different cuts available and the wider blade, but I have only 18" square of counter top space and I can’t afford to have the mandolin take up all the room. The truffle shaver even works great for chocolate, hard cheese, and frozen meats for making your own Mongolian BBQ. I really couldn’t live without it and I think more people would find it useful if they can get past the fancy name.
