"I’m addicted to popcorn, I’ll admit it. Popcorn is probably popped four times per week in my home, and has been since I was a little kid. I’ve tried many different ways to pop popcorn from a traditional pot on the stovetop to air poppers to microwave poppers and nothing comes close to the popcorn this Whirley Pop can make. Yes, it takes longer to make than in a microwave, and it takes more work than in a simple pot. But the popcorn this popcorn makes is second to none. The flavor is so good the popcorn doesn’t need any butter, and I just use a tiny amount of salt.
Follow the included instructions exactly. It will take some time to perfect the correct ratio of oil to corn and stove temperature. You will be surprised how little oil it takes to make good popcorn with this popcorn popper. A couple of quick tips:
- As mentioned previously, follow the included instructions
- Place about five kernels into the popper and let them pop before putting in the rest of the popcorn.
- If any of the popcorn burns, the temperature was too hot, if the popcorn is "chewy", the temperature was too low…. The popcorn should be crispy, not chewy. Too much oil can also lead to chewy popcorn.
- Once the popcorn starts popping, don’t stop cranking the handle
- This might sound a little gross…. but unless the popper gets extremely greasy I try not to use soap to wash the popper between uses. No matter how well I rinse it I can taste the soap the next time I use it. Instead use hot water and steel-wool.
- I’ve never had the crank break, however I do replace the popper about once per year as the crank assembly can become greasy and impossible to clean due to the small moving parts.
- I enjoy white popcorn. I don’t just mean popcorn without butter. Kernels come in either yellow or white. Many, many grocery stores only carry yellow kernels, however I enjoy the taste of white kernels much better. The texture of the popcorn white kernels produces is much better and yellow popcorn always tastes too moist and chewy to me."
